WISDOM TOOTH REMOVAL (IMPACTIONS):

Wisdom teeth are the third and the last set of molars that come out between the ages of 17 and 25. When this happens it can lead to tearing of the gums and bacterial build-up, which in turn can result in infection, pain and tooth decay. In many such cases, your only option might be a surgical removal.

What Are The Main Reasons For Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

  • Insufficient space for the wisdom tooth to come through, thereby causing pain and discomfort
  • Extensive tooth decay
  • Repeated infection of soft tissue behind the tooth
  • Damage to nearby teeth due to improper tooth alignment

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF IMPACTED WISDOM TEETH?

It must be understood that once problems with wisdom teeth occur, there is a good chance they have become impacted. There are an array of signs and symptoms that will alert you when something just does not feel right.

The warning signs of impacted wisdom teeth are:

  • Pain and tenderness close to the gums in the back of your mouth
  • Swelling Around the jaw
  • Swollen, tender, red or bleeding gums
  • Headaches

There are varying degrees of impacted wisdom teeth: some are partially impacted with just the crown showing, while others never break through the gums and become fully impacted. In some cases impacted wisdom teeth may not manifest any symptoms. If you start to experience any pain or see that you are having any of the symptoms, be sure to visit your dentist and have it checked out immediately.

What are the restrictions following the impacted wisdom tooth removal surgery?

  • We advise patients to avoid strenuous physical activity for 24 hrs following surgery, but no restrictions for routine daily activities.
  • Smoking before and after surgery can cause dry socket or delayed healing. You should stop smoking completely until the extraction sockets heal, which may take couple of weeks.
  • Similar restrictions apply for alcoholic and aerated beverages.
  • There will be restriction on certain foods for 24 hrs as well.

What about discomfort following the surgery?

  • Some difficulty in opening your mouth wide is expected from the 1st post surgery day of the surgery, but this will gradually return to normal. Mouth opening exercises help open the mouth earlier.
  • Some patients experience temporary difficulty or soreness when swallowing.
  • You will experience swelling around your jaws at the site of surgery, which generally increases for 48-72 hrs following which it tends to subside. Swelling can vary tremendously among patients and between different procedures.
